once more, me facing a mirror, this time oil pastels and turpentine to blend at hand… (I should use cleaner colours but i can’t help mixing and using dirty ones, haha). I was too tired when i did it so now i realized my eyes are in a different line but the idea was to also not add too much details. i tried to make it using shapes and not using lines i mean rather pictorial than drawing

another still life, first i sketched with grey and black oil pastel. on topd i added some colors, then blended with turpentine and continued adding more colors + blackand white or some complementary for the shadows. took me about an hour to make it (35×50 cm approx)

i’m attending an 8-weeks-summer course at a museum, which has a wonderful Andaluz garden (as a garden in Andalucía – Spain). the teacher makes us see the shapes, the contrasts, the colours, the different greens we see, etc, without making details which is too difficult for me, because I always tend to go till the most tiny detail if I can. working with watercolurs in the last years has helped me in that, though in this case, these two works i did this mornig, i used oil pastels to make some shapes then blurred it with turpentine and a strong brush and kept on adding more oil pastel, tried to blend it in some places and not in others.

still life

gouache painting

this painting was my final work for the subject at school (painting I) Unfortunaltely the teacher couldn’t see it. She was diagnosed of a terminal illness a few days before the final exam so she was hospitalized. After I came back from holidays a few days ago I learnt she passed away on jan 02. I couldn’t thank her for the freedom I’d felt painting during the year term in her classes, though I had told her, the last day I saw her, I was planning to do two subjects with her this year 2010, but it that won’t be possible now. Everytime we met on the street or in some school hall a smiled lightened up her face under the dark glasses she was always wearing. i’ll always remember that. Wherever she is now, she must be painting, drawing and making jokes for sure. rip

After the final exam I took this painting (110×75 cm) to a contest at an art galley. I didn’t expect to win of course, and luckily it was not rejected so it’s still hanging on their walls. Surely in a few days I’ll have to pick it up as a new exhibition will be held.

the painting is in gouache, on heavy paper first covered with gesso, . after it was finished I stuck it to a 0,5 cm thick wood and covered the whole painting on top with turpentine and dammar varnish to protect it

another sketch from a magazine photo. i would like to use my own photos but i don’t have photos of people, they’re mostly landscape… anyway sometimes it’s the only way to practice. i know i should’ve stuck the paper on a board but i don’t always do that…
